The government began consultation on proposals to introduce new standards for the independent schools sector in England. The new standards would include: a standard on leadership and management, proposed to enable more effective action in cases where leadership needed to be improved or replaced; changes regarding the quality of education, and pupil welfare; changes to the standards on spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils to help combat extremism; and technical amendments relating to the suitability of staff and proprietors. The consultation would close on 18 August 2014.
